Patrik Capila is flying the flag for Brazil in the Paulo Duarte FIM EnduroGP World Championship by leading the FIM Enduro Open 4-Stroke World Cup…
The FIM Enduro Open World Cup is an integral part of the Paulo Duarte FIM EnduroGP World Championship. Acting as an important stepping stone into the world championship, it offers riders an opportunity to test the waters of EnduroGP without the additional pressure and demands that go with racing against the world’s best enduro riders.
With a strong entry of competitors at all three rounds of the Paulo Duarte FIM EnduroGP World Championship, we’re witnessing competitive racing across all three sub-categories within Enduro Open.
At the head of the Open 4S class, it’s Brazil’s Patrik Capila (Fantic) who leads the way. Through the support of Fantic Motor and Italian Racing Parts, Patrik has been able to realise his dream of competing in the world championship.
Immediately up to speed, the seven-time Brazilian national champion impressed in Portugal, Spain and Sweden. Claiming five wins from six starts, and with the Enduro Open categories allowed to drop four point-scoring days across a full season, he’s close to clinching the title next time out at the Forsiteservices GP of Wales in August.
“It’s a unique experience for me to race in a world championship,” tells Patrik, from the podium at the Polisport GP of Sweden. “With five victories in six race days, it’s been a great start to the season, so far. Right now, I’m leading the Enduro Open 4S class and slowly getting my hands on the title!
“I’m very thankful for the support I have at home in Brazil. I have a lot of friends who help me out with training and to be here. I don’t think there’s ever been a Brazilian rider leading a category in the world championship, so it’s cool to have the support of Brazil behind me.”
For the Enduro Open category, competitors don’t race the full schedule of a world championship weekend like their counterparts in EnduroGP do. Where EnduroGP would complete three laps of the course, Enduro Open often do two, and follow a slightly more relaxed time schedule with deviations on the most demanding of liaisons or sections of the special tests.
While still a physical challenge to race the ACERBIS Cross Test, GMOTO Enduro Test and POLISPORT Extreme Test, the goal of Enduro Open is to act as a stepping stone to the top level, which Patrik seems to be enjoying.
“I believe it’s important to have an Enduro Open class in the world championship because it serves as an intermediate category,” he says. “Racing in Enduro Open allows riders to prepare for EnduroGP, without going straight to the top level immediately.
“You can evolve in the class and learn the style of racing. It’s a tough championship, but this class lets you grow, and you don’t end up going through difficult times straight away. You can become a better rider as a result.”
With Portugal, Spain and Sweden behind him, what’s next for our Brazilian racer? Will he be in Wales to fight for the title?
“Yes!”, he smiles. “Looking ahead, I have the GP of Wales in August. I have a good lead in the championship, so it is possible to win the title there. We are allowed to drop four point-scoring days across the season, so I need to finish each day in Wales to have a chance at the title there. But for sure, I will try to continue with the rest of the championship. I would also like to do the FIM 6DAYS® too.
“I just want to thank everyone who’s helping me, both in the Brazilian championship and in the world championship. Every race is getting more and more difficult to attend. It’s expensive and not easy to do, so I appreciate the support so much.
“Thank you to everyone who is rooting for me, hopefully we can go to the GP of Wales and win the title there!”
